A visit to India's production base for frozen green peas
Shimla Hills team recently visited Kashipur, Uttarakhand - the heart of frozen green peas industry in India. Pea being a cool season crop is grown extensively in cool temperate zones of the world.
The peak pea production season in India lasts between December and February. Hence it was the most opportune time for us to undertake a market research, as well as examine crop patterns for sourcing frozen green peas from this region.
India's annual pea consumption crosses roughly around 90,000 metric tonne. Uttarakhand meets approximately 40% of this demand. With well organised and viable commercial practices, Uttarakhand has evolved into a hub of processed food industry, especially for fresh frozen peas. Approximately, 14 food processing units have come up at locations like Dehradun, Kashipur, Nainital and Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
The frozen green pea is becoming a huge market, given to the fact that in 2010 the world pea exports were 1.29 billion dollars. Some of the primary markets importing frozen green peas in bulk qualities include - Egypt, Israel, Vietnam, Belgium, USA and Europe.
